concept:collaboration

The Project

As individual performers, we have experienced a lack of opportunity for young composers and musicians to collaborate. In order to continue creating new innovative music, there needs to be a platform for emerging artists to explore ideas, learn from one another and develop their craft. Concept sextet has started a call for scores project that seeks to extend our existing vision, promote professional practice and to invite composers to share and develop their ideas.

Concept:Collaboration is about giving all composers and artists an opportunity to put their works forward to receive quality recordings, feedback and experience. As such we have no age limit, no restrictions on experience or nationality and no limits on the number of pieces you can enter.

Process

This process was designed in advance of the project occurring – timelines changed and small tweaks were made.

1 | Receiving Scores

We receive scores and parts without personal information attached, discuss various aspects and organise players.

2 | Selecting Repertoire

We read and look over works in a closed rehearsal. Depending on the quantity of submissions works will be marked for either a read-through recording or a live workshop. Works selected for live workshop are based on the following criteria:

  • Innovative or new concepts and ideas
  • Opportunity to share feedback
  • Part preparation
  • Technical requirements
  • Logistics and ensemble writing
  • Overall fit for ensemble/musicians, and for the overall vision

3 | Workshops

Selected composers are invited to come along to a rehearsal to workshop the piece/work with the ensemble. Where a composer is unable to attend this will be done via live stream or video exchange.

4 | Recording/Performance

For works selected for live workshop we are working with sound engineers to produce recordings, sometimes during our performances. The timeline on these recordings is subject to change due to a number of factors including quantity of scores, availability of performers/engineers and difficulty of works.
